Your Skills Can Make a Difference: Thoughtful Volunteering

You do not need to promise every spare hour to make a useful contribution. A few hours offered reliably for a well-defined task may be more helpful than a large commitment that is difficult to sustain.

Before choosing a volunteering role, think about what you can offer, how much time you have and the kind of work you feel ready to do. Then ask the organisation where that contribution is needed.

Begin with the task

Depending on current needs, a charity may seek help with preparing learning materials, organising information, translating approved content, supporting event logistics or reviewing a website’s accessibility. These are examples to discuss, not a list of confirmed openings at Al Lina.

A clear role should explain the task, the expected time commitment, who provides guidance and how completion will be checked. Agree these details before starting, particularly when the work involves sensitive information or contact with people receiving support.

Reliability matters

Choose a commitment that fits your circumstances. Confirm deadlines, keep the person coordinating your work informed and give notice if your availability changes. Keep shared files organised so another person can continue the work when needed.

If a task falls outside your skills or agreed role, ask for guidance. Good intentions do not replace the training or supervision a task may require.

Protect people’s dignity

Treat personal stories and information with care. Do not take or share photographs simply because you are helping at an activity. Follow the organisation’s consent and safeguarding arrangements, and ask before posting anything about participants or their circumstances.

Volunteering is also an opportunity to listen. People receiving support have their own preferences, experience and decisions to make. Respectful help makes room for those choices.

Tell us what you can offer

If you would like to volunteer with Al Lina Charity, share your skills, availability, preferred tasks and any relevant experience through the volunteer page. The next step is to discuss whether there is a suitable current need and what preparation the role requires. Sending an enquiry does not guarantee a placement.
